25 minutes from Chicago in Munster, Indiana

Do you have constant back, neck and shoulder pain from large breasts?

Do your breasts cause poor posture and prevent you from exercising or engaging in certain activities? Do people make comments about your large breasts, forcing you to wear baggy clothing to hide them? For women dealing with these issues and others, breast reduction surgery might be the answer.

This is a tried-and-true procedure that is among the most satisfying for patients in all of Plastic Surgery. Also known as “reduction mammaplasty”, breast reduction surgery decreases the size of the breasts by removing excess fat, breast tissue, and skin. This creates breasts that are in proportion to your body and relieves the symptoms associated with extremely large breasts. Another benefit of a breast reduction is that the breasts are simultaneously lifted.

Who is a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?

First and foremost, breast reduction surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you must do it for yourself, not to please someone else or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. During your consultation, NW Indiana breast reduction surgeon Doctor Jason Petrungaro will stress to you that this is a permanent change to your breasts and that you must be 100% confident in your decision to proceed.

Breast reduction is a good option for you if:

You are physically healthy
You have realistic expectations
You don’t smoke
You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
Your breasts limit your physical activity
You experience back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
You have regular indentations from bra straps that support heavy, pendulous breasts
You have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
Your breasts hang low and have stretched skin
Your nipples rest below the breast crease when your breasts are unsupported
You have enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin

Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery typically takes 3-4 hours to complete. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Doctor Petrungaro will place incision marks on your breasts with a marker in the preoperative unit prior to entering the operating room. Doctor Petrungaro uses the “Wise pattern, inferior pedicle technique,” meaning you will have incisions around each areola, vertically from the areola down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the length of the crease.

Once the surgery has begun and after Doctor Petrungaro has made his incisions:

The underlying excess breast tissue is removed.
The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural height.
Enlarged areolas are reduced by excising skin at the perimeter.
Excess breast skin is removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity.

After your breasts are reduced, the remaining skin is tightened while the incisions are closed. Some incisions made during a breast reduction are concealed in the natural breast contours, such as the crease; however, others will remain visible on the breast surface, particularly the incision around the areola and the vertical incision down to the crease. Incision lines are visible, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time. Doctor Petrungaro absolutely understands that his patients want the smallest scars possible. Stitches are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly reduced breasts. The skin incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches that will remain below the skin and will not need to be removed. Special skin glue or tape may be placed over the skin incisions, and you will typically be placed into a comfortable surgical bra at the end of the procedure. Prior to the conclusion of the surgery, Doctor Petrungaro will place a small tube drain into each breast to allow fluid and blood to drain out and prevent any collections within the breasts.

Breast Reduction Recovery*

Recovery from a breast reduction is very straightforward. That being said, it is extremely important to follow all of the postoperative instructions that you are given by Doctor Petrungaro. Pain is very well-controlled with oral prescription pain medications. You will be seen in the clinic within 1-2 days following your surgery, and then every 1-2 weeks for the first 6 weeks. Your incisions will likely be covered with skin glue or special tape for the first week.

During your recovery you will need to wear a surgical bra or a soft sports bra to help support your breasts as they heal. It is very important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion while they are healing. The drains placed during surgery will be removed in the clinic after 5-7 days as long as there is not a significant amount of fluid still draining.

Doctor Petrungaro will require you to take one week off work or school. All strenuous activity is prohibited for the first few weeks, at which time you may start to slowly increase activity to include things such as brisk walking or use of an elliptical. Any type of activity requiring extreme arm movements or contact is prohibited for at least 6 weeks. If you commit to following the instructions of Munster breast reduction surgeon Doctor Jason Petrungaro, you will be well on your way to beautiful new breasts and a new lifestyle!

Breast Reduction Results*

As stated earlier, a breast reduction can dramatically change your life for the better. It is not uncommon for many of Doctor Petrungaro’s patients to be reduced to tears of joy after surgery because their pain is gone, they can finally go to the gym, they can wear the clothing they have always wanted, and their self image has vastly improved.

Results of a breast reduction are visible immediately, and the vast majority of patients are overwhelmingly happy with the new look of their breasts. Like all Plastic Surgery procedures, your breasts will still need time to heal and settle, a process which will take a few months. During this time your incision lines will begin to fade as well. It is important to realize that despite having a breast reduction, your breasts will still continue to change over time due to age and gravity. You can help maintain the results of your breast reduction longer if you commit to a healthy diet and lifestyle without major weight fluctuations.

Many women ask about breastfeeding after a breast reduction. It is impossible to guarantee that you will still be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction. Considering the fact that actual milk-producing breast tissue is removed during this procedure, there is a chance that a breast reduction could decrease the amount of milk produced or even prevent a woman from breastfeeding altogether. If you are interested in a breast reduction but you still plan on having children and breastfeeding is important to you, Doctor Petrungaro will recommend that you finish bearing children prior to having your breast reduction.
