The Proper Age for Cosmetic Surgery

Two of the frequently asked questions we hear are “Am I too old for this procedure?” and “Am I too young for this procedure?” Though the questions are different, they share the same common background – How do I know I am the right age for cosmetic surgery?

Are you (or the individual interested) too young?

We hear this question from both teens and adults.

Plastic surgery for teenagers is on the rise nationwide, but can be an extremely complicated decision that must be handled with the careful consideration of the teenager, parents and doctor involved. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the most rewarding outcomes occur when:

“The teenager initiates the request.”

It must be clear the teenager initiated the discussion about potential cosmetic surgery, and the conversation is not driven by the desires of the parent(s).

“The teenager has realistic goals.”

The teenager must understand both the process and outcomes of cosmetic surgery, and acknowledge surgical procedures seek to boost self-confidence but will not alone result in significant social life changes or behaviors.

“The teenager has sufficient maturity.”

Whether you are a teenager or an adult, going through a surgical procedure is not always an easy process. These procedures very often come with pain, discomfort and extended periods of recovery.

Cosmetic surgery for teenagers is undertaken with a great amount of caution, consultation and confirmation that the suggested procedures would benefit the quality of the young person’s life.

For many adults who ask “Am I too young?” when inquiring about procedures, our doctors consult with these potential patients on a case-by-case basis. While a patient may be concerned about age, doctors may be more concerned about other lifestyle matters. For example, a doctor will discuss with a woman in her 20’s to determine if waiting until after she has children is the better time for her to undergo a breast augmentation procedure or a body contouring procedure.

Are you (or the individual interested) too old?

As many people are living longer and healthier lives than ever before, it is important to note that there are no legal age limits preventing aging individuals to undergo plastic surgery, and as with all plastic surgery procedures, the health history and intentions discussed during consultation are the determining factors before a doctor will green light scheduling a procedure.

Common procedures for seniors include liposuction, facelifts, eyelid surgery and laser skin resurfacing to remove age spots and other marks. Prior to any procedure, Doctor Petrungaro will become familiar with the patient’s entire medical history. This allows him to determine the patient’s ability to handle procedure components such as pain, medicine, and anesthesia during the surgical process.
