A breast lift, also known as “mastopexy”, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. The nipple and the areola are also moved upwards into the correct anatomic position. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well.

Methods of Breast Lift Surgery
Breast lift surgery is done by removing excess skin from the breast and re-positioning the nipple. If the areola is enlarged, it can be reduced at the same time. There are four incisions used in this type of surgery depending on the degree of sagging.
Combined Breast Lift and Augmentation
This procedure is also known as an “augmentation mastopexy.” Breast lift surgery alone does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you are looking to noticeably increase your breast volume and upper breast fullness in addition to lifting your breasts, a combined procedure may be right for you. During this procedure, Doctor Petrungaro will place a breast implant to augment the breasts, followed by a breast lift to reshape the breast tissue, tighten the skin, and bring the nipples up into the appropriate position. Doctor Petrungaro uses Natrelle breast implants by Allergan — and as a standing offer, every Natrelle implant patient receives 50 units of Botox free (for the patient only), enough to treat multiple areas of the face, courtesy of Allergan, the company behind both Natrelle implants and Botox.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?
If you are in overall good health, have a true personal desire to change the shape of your breasts, and have realistic goals concerning your surgical results, then you may be a candidate for breast lift surgery. Most women considering this type of surgery are dissatisfied with the sagging and decreased volume of their breasts and hope to surgically correct it.

During the initial consultation, Doctor Petrungaro will take very specific measurements and perform a very detailed examination of the breasts in order to get an idea of what the patient is looking to achieve with her breast lift. There are many breast lift techniques available, and each one is designed to treat different degrees of breast ptosis, a.k.a. sagging. Doctor Petrungaro has extensive training on which technique is right for each individual patient.
Breast Lift Procedure
Breast lift surgery typically takes 2-3 hours to complete, depending on which technique is used. The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. Doctor Petrungaro will place incision marks on your breasts with a marker in the preoperative unit prior to entering the operating room. Once the surgery has begun and after Doctor Petrungaro has made his incisions:
After your breasts are lifted and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened while the incisions are closed. Some incisions made during a breast lift are concealed in the natural breast contours, such as the crease; however, others will remain visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time. Doctor Petrungaro absolutely understands that his patients want the smallest scars possible. Stitches are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. The skin incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches that will remain below the skin and will not need to be removed. Special skin glue or tape may be placed over the skin incisions, and you will typically be placed into a comfortable surgical bra at the end of the procedure.

Recovery from a breast lift is very straightforward. That being said, it is extremely important to follow all of the postoperative instructions that you are given by Doctor Petrungaro. Pain is very well-controlled with oral prescription pain medications. You will be seen in the clinic within 1-2 days following your surgery, and then every 1-2 weeks for the first 6 weeks. Your incisions will likely be covered with skin glue or special tape for the first week. During your recovery you will need to wear a surgical bra or a soft sports bra to help support your breasts as they heal. It is very important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion while they are healing. In some cases, a small drain may be placed during surgery (while you are asleep) in one or both breasts to help remove postoperative fluid. This drain is removed in the clinic at 5-7 days.
It will be very helpful to take at least one week off work, but this can be negotiable. All strenuous activity is prohibited for the first few weeks, at which time you may start to slowly increase activity to include things such as brisk walking or use of an elliptical. Any type of activity requiring extreme arm movements or contact is prohibited for at least 6 weeks. Breast Lift Results
Results of a breast lift are visible immediately, and the vast majority of patients are overwhelmingly happy with the new look of their breasts. Like all cosmetic procedures, your breasts will still need time to heal and settle, a process which will take a few months. During this time your incision lines will begin to fade as well.
It is important to realize that despite having a breast lift, your breasts will still continue to change over time due to age and gravity. You can help maintain the results of your breast lift longer if you commit to a healthy diet and lifestyle without major weight fluctuations.
How breast lift pricing works — and why I quote after an exam, not online
I know pricing matters in your decision, so let me explain how a quote for elective, out-of-pocket cosmetic surgery is put together — and why you’ll never see a one-size-fits-all price on my website.
Every quote has the same building blocks. First is the surgeon’s fee. This varies widely: a surgeon’s fee reflects their training, board certification, experience, and what’s included in their practice — and it varies by region, with the same operation costing far more in Manhattan or Los Angeles than in the Midwest. (Note: when you see a “national average fee” quoted online, that’s the surgeon’s fee only — never the all-in price.)
Next is the surgery center fee — anesthesia plus the facility: nursing, OR supplies, recovery, and everything that keeps you safe while you’re asleep. Surgery centers charge by the hour, so a longer, more involved operation means a higher facility fee — one more reason your quote has to wait for your exam.
Finally, incidentals: in my quotes this covers your surgical bra and a cosmetic insurance policy protecting you against complications for 45 days after your procedure.
Watch out for this: some surgeons quote what looks like a low price because they’re only giving you the surgeon’s fee and omitting everything else. You’ll get one all-inclusive quote from us in writing — what you pay our office and what you pay the surgery center separately — so the full picture is clear before you commit to anything.
Why I don’t publish my prices: because I can’t quote you accurately until I’ve examined you. A crescent lift, a periareolar lift, a lollipop lift, and an anchor lift with an augmentation are four different operations — and most patients don’t know which one they need until I see them. Publishing a single number would just confuse you. What I can promise: your quote will be all-inclusive, in writing, after a thorough in-person exam — and every patient receives $500 off every surgery as our standing offer.
